Education 140 AC Presentation

한 학기동안 St. Anthony 라는 Christian School 가서 4학년 아이들을 가르쳐주며 봉사활동하며 겪은 일에 대한 프레젼테이션이다. 한 2일간 정말 열심히 목을 쉬어가면서 준비했는데, 나의 GSI (graduated student instructor) 가 실수를 했는지, 내 이름을 스케줄에 넣어놓지 않았었다. 

이메일을 몇번이나 보내보아도 답장이 없어서,

그냥 연습을 수 없이 하고 정장처럼 옷을 차려입고 준비를 해서 가니,

GSI 가 하는소리가 날 맨 마지막 순서에 넣어준다고 하면서, 내가볼땐 너가 할 시간은 없을 것 같다고 한다. 그리고 그냥 준비한 파워포인트를 자기 이메일로 보내주면 알아서 평가한다고 하는거다.

너무 그의 무책임하고 이메일에 대한 답변에 없는 것에

속상했었다. 도대체 난 무엇을 위해서 준비한 것이었을까?

그래서 나중에라도 학기가 끝나고 난 다음에, 파워포인트랑 목소리 녹음해서 유투브에 올리기라도 해야겠다. 그래야지 뭔가 남으니깐. 지금은 너무 허무하단 말이지...

다른 애들이 발표하는 걸보니 확실히 버클리학교가 아이디어도 참신하고 너무 잘만든다고 느꼇엇다.

발표때 말할려고 했던 script:

Hi,

My name is Taegyun Park.

And Today I will talk about my site called St. Anthony School.

I think someone might say, what’s that? (표정일그러지면서)

Well.. (떨면서) it’s a school. (that’s a best thing I can say)

 

So,

I prepared the picture of the school for those who might be curious about it.

And as you can see, It looks really nice and safe. Let me give an interesting fact. They always locked the door, 24 hours. Ahh..so they can prevent from the stranger to just come in.  Yeah.. that’s good that’s good. But Sometimes, they prevent ME to come in thou … am I look stranger?.. maybe.

 

Anyways, enough for the joke. let’s get started.

 

probably as you expected from my English accent,

I am a foreign student from Korea.

 

And Today, I really want to share about my experience at the fieldwork

And I should say, it was really valuable, dramatic, and educational in my life.

 

For the first time,

My education goal as teacher was that I wanted to be supportive and friendly teacher to them. I didn’t want to be just a strict teacher.

 

To be honest,

For the first time,

it was totally failed.

 

I thought

The reasons were those

 

First, language issue, which is my accent and lack of the literacy.

So, sometimes, I could not help them even though I know the answer.

 

Second, Attitude Issue: Since I wanted to be a friendly teacher, so I tried not to punish them for being wrong. So, Sometimes I did not point out for being wrong. But sometimes, I did.

 

Then, I heard those heartbreaking words from the students.

•       You are not scary, so I can do whatever I want

•       I do not want to work with you because you only punished me!

•       I could not understand from your accent.

•       You even do not know this vocabulary meaning. How can you teach me?

 

(paused for 5 seconds)

휴…

Then, I asked to myself.

Am I really. possible. to be a good teacher?  

 

I tried my best, but the reality was different.

 

When I was about to give up

I read this comic. To teach the journey.

Then I found this quote.

“Teaching at its best is not a matter of techniques
it’s primarily
an act of love

 

흠…

So, I thought maybe the problem was not a language nor knowledge.

 

Then, I also read this situation. And it looks like just like my situation.

 

Then I thought,

maybe, Teachers do not have to be perfect.

Maybe the failure was just a beginning to achieve my goal.

Maybe all of those heartbreaking words were the evaluation from student. And it is the opportunity to improve.

So, I tried to learn lessons from them.

 

And I found

For those two, I thought maybe the student felt unfair.

So, I made certain rule to help their education and also to be fair.

 

And For my English accent problem,

I started to use the whiteboard, and it really helps to overcome the problem.

 

And for last one,

I start to use a dictionary with student. So, I help them to find the meaning of the word, and also I learn from it as well. And It makes more educational.

 

At the end of the class,

I always asked student to evaluate my tutoring session. I said feel free.

I continuously try to interact with them, and it helps me a lot.

 

After that,

I could find myself to be better teacher.
